🧴 1. Meet the Basic Eligibility Requirements
To start:
You must be at least 16 years old, or
Have a high school diploma or GED.Either one satisfies eligibility.
📚 2. Complete a State‑Approved Training Program
You must complete a minimum of 220 hours in a state‑approved facial specialty (esthetician) program at a licensed cosmetology or esthetics school in Florida. The training includes:
Skin care theory and analysis
Facials and treatments
Hair removal (waxing, tweezing, etc.)
Makeup application
Sanitation and safety practices
Hands‑on clinical practice
📍 Note: Florida requires in‑person hands‑on training — you cannot complete all 220 hours fully online. Some schools offer hybrid programs (online theory + in‑person clinics).
Most students finish the training in 2–4 months depending on full‑time or part‑time attendance.
🧬 3. Complete the Required HIV/AIDS Course
You must take a 4‑hour board‑approved HIV/AIDS course before applying for your license. The certificate must be from an approved provider and completed within two years before applying.
📝 4. Apply for Your Facial Specialist Registration
When your training and HIV/AIDS certificate are complete:
Submit the Facial Specialist Registration application (Form COSMO‑1) to the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR).
Include your training certificate and HIV/AIDS certificate.
Pay the required application and registration fees (about $75 total — check current DBPR fees on MyFloridaLicense.com).
Important: Florida does not require a separate state board exam for estheticians — the school’s final exam and completion of hours serve as the competency requirement.
🔄 5. Maintain Your License (Renewal)
Your Facial Specialist registration must be renewed every 2 years.
You’ll need:
10 hours of continuing education (CE)Â each renewal period, including required topics like HIV/AIDS updates, sanitation, Florida law, etc.
Pay the renewal fee by the deadline (usually October 31 of odd/even years).
🧠Optional: Transfer an Out‑of‑State License
If you’re already licensed in another state, Florida may allow licensure by endorsement — meaning you can apply based on your current license if your training and qualifications meet Florida’s requirements. You’ll still need to submit proof of your education and documentation of hours.
